An evening with Frank Bidart and Alice Oswald
A reading by two of our finest performers of poetry.

Frank Bidart’s new book is Half-light: Collected Poems. “No other poet sounds like Bidart,” wrote Garth Greenwell. You can hear the muscular physicality of his language, the way the sentence twists around the line breaks, never quite as expected. His work is one of the unfolding wonders of the literature of our time.”

Alice Oswald’s new collection is Falling Awake. “Hers is a mystical work, and when she writes you can hear the long heritage of English verse behind her,” wrote The Economist. “Her poems have a rhythmical tightness. They are propulsive, forward-pulsing, knitting one line to another. She is acutely alive in the world.” Impressively,  Oswald will recite her poems from memory.

In the course of his extensive research, Russell uncovered the complete text of Catherine Howard’s interrogation, which has not been published since the 18th century; he incorporates that text along with color photographs, family tree, map, and notes to give us a new understanding of one of history’s most famous women.

St. George’s Society of New York has teamed up with STX Entertainment to offer complimentary tickets to a preview of Their Finest on April 5.

With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry as a “slop” scriptwriter charged with bringing “a woman’s touch” to morale-boosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) whose path would never have crossed hers in peacetime. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and a colorful crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation. Although Catrin’s artist husband looks down on her job, she quickly discovers there is as much camaraderie, laughter and passion behind the camera as there is onscreen.

Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life – Royal Oak Foundation lecture

Drawing on her extensive access to the Royal Family’s inner circle, the New York Times bestselling author Sally Bedell Smith presents the first major biography of Prince Charles in more than two decades: Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life.

Ms. Smith will give unprecedented insights into Prince Charles, a man who possesses a fiercely independent spirit, and yet has spent his life in waiting for the ultimate role of monarch. Beginning with his childhood, Smith will detail his intellectual quests, his entrepreneurial pursuits, and his love affairs—from the tragedy of his marriage to Diana to his eventual reunion with Camilla. She will also describe his relationship with the next generation of royals, including William, Katherine, Harry, and his beloved grandchildren. Ms. Smith captures a man who has been described as an 18th-century gentleman with a 21st-century mission—a life filled with contradictions and convictions. This is a lecture not just about a man who would be king, but also about the duties that come with privilege.

John Maclay is in his 18th season as Music Director of the Choral Society of Grace Church in New York. Under his leadership, the 150-voice ensemble has emerged as one of New York City’s most exciting choruses and is the only large chorus in New York City to perform in mixed formation, not in voice-part blocks.
