Getting to Know Our Board of Directors: Mark Aiston
Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Where did you grow up? When did you move to New York? What do you do for a living? Any fun passions or hobbies you’d like to share?
I grew up in the North East of England and proudly call myself a Geordie. I first visited New York in 1985, it seemed to be a natural progression from London and it had always fascinated me. I met the girl who was to become my wife and moved here permanently in 1986.
For almost forty years I have worked in the art world. Having worked for two large UK companies here, I started my own transport and art storage business in 2002 - Aiston Fine Art Services. I’m a keen outdoor sports/adventure sports participant (because I wasn’t good enough at soccer, cricket or rugby). Although my exploits have tamed a little of late, I still race sail boats and enjoy mountaineering trips here in the US and to far flung destinations such as The Himalayas, Patagonia and The Antarctic. I’m an active member of The American Alpine Club.
When and how did you first learn about St. George’s Society of New York?
I first learned about St George’s over 25 years ago whilst providing shipping services for Saint Thomas Church and through the Rector at the time, John Andrew.
What made you interested in joining the board of directors?
I stand here thanks to the help and generosity of others. I enjoy being able to “give back”, but that only really works if one is part of a vibrant and effective charity such as St George’s. Being invited to join the board was an honour I’m happy to fulfill.
What hopes do you have for the Society during your term on the board? If you know, where would you like to be involved?
I hope to help make the line between our charitable efforts and the recipients’ welfare as short as possible.
What was the biggest culture shock about NYC when you first moved here?
It was unbelievably dilapidated and out of date. Mind you, that was 1985. I’d expected more. Other than that, it was London but on steroids.
What’s your favourite moment so far, from your involvement at St George’s?
Each car ride I take from JFK to Manhattan with my MSKC families.
What’s your best NYC memory?
Competing in the Mayor’s Cup classic sailing regatta in New York harbor, under the gaze of the Statue of Liberty.
