Join the Scholarship Circle and Support a Scholar Today
St. George’s Society of New York understands that higher education serves as an engine for social and economic mobility. Our Scholarship Program ensures that immigrant and first-generation college students who, due to financial hardship, might not otherwise complete their final year on schedule are able to graduate on time and enter the workforce with a life-changing degree.
In addition to financial support, SGSNY provides several enrichment opportunities. This includes professional development workshops, networking opportunities that allow scholars to grow their conversational skills and professional networks in a safe, supportive environment, and connections to SGSNY members who can provide them with mentorship and job referrals in their career sector.
Individuals and companies who commit to our Scholarship Circle remove the financial barriers these students face so they can focus on their studies and advance their professional goals.
Your Impact
SGSNY serves students who frequently attend school full-time while working part-time (or even full-time) jobs to support their families locally and abroad. According to a 2024 study, “first generation students were more likely to say they have considered leaving college or face a dismissal risk (41 percent) compared to their continuing-generation peers (18 percent).” They found that the number one risk of students dropping out was due to financial challenges (Sallie Mae).* The added stress of work while attending school and family responsibilities places these students at high-risk for not completing their degree.
Students in SGSNY’s Scholarship Program are beating the odds. SGSNY Scholars:
Are 74% female
Are 98% BIPOC
Are frequently the first in their family to attend college
Pursue careers in medicine and other STEM fields, education, and social work
Graduate at a rate of 98%

Meet Toni
Born to a Jamaican mother and a Kittian father, Lystonia (Toni) always wanted to be a teacher. Her childhood tutor inspired her love for math—making a once complicated subject fun and approachable.
At the urging of her parents, she began college as a pre-nursing student, but after two years, came to the realization that it was not the path for her and she made the difficult decision to put school on hold. It took three more years of working multiple jobs and starting her own tutoring business before she returned to Hunter College to pursue her B.A. in Mathematics. Shortly thereafter, she was accepted into an accelerated program that enabled her to simultaneously earn her Masters in Adolescent Mathematics Education and obtain her teaching license.
As one can imagine, completing two degrees while working four jobs was almost impossible. Her scholarship from St. George’s Society funded the entirety of her final year’s tuition.
“When I went back to school, I was working and commuting a lot just to get by. I had a little help along the way, but St. George’s Society was the saving grace I desperately needed.”
Having graduated in the spring of 2018, she taught sixth grade math, and currently runs her own tutoring company, Play.Math.Grow. Amid all this, she met the love of her life, got married, with whom she has a young daughter.
Of her work, she says:
“I strive to invest in my community members’ collective well-being so that they can use their healthy energy to transform themselves, their families and their communities. I believe that a classroom should never be limited in its exploration—that personal confidence is an integral component of success, that reciprocity at any scale can change the world, and that respect for self and others promotes peace.”
