New Board Member: Brad Simmons
Welcome, Brad!
1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am 48 years old and currently immersed in the luxury hospitality world, overseeing sales, marketing, and branding for high-end hotels. My journey began with drama and film studies, leading me to a stint as an actor in my late teens and early twenties. You might have spotted me in “Casualty,” “Cider with Rosie,” or an assortment of period dramas and corporate training videos. While my acting days are behind me, my love for TV and film remains strong. These days, my creative outlet is through photography and writing - I am thrilled that my first children’s book will be published soon. I grew up in Bristol, where my family still resides. I moved to London at 18 and called it home until 2016, when I ventured to Vancouver, BC, to rebrand a luxury hotel.
I arrived in New York in late March 2019, focusing on the grand opening of Rosewood Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands. I lead Sales, Marketing, Branding, and PR for luxury hotels. My career has been a journey through prestigious properties such as Gleneagles, Atlantis The Palm in Dubai (which I opened in 2008), Claridge’s, and a 12-year chapter with Rosewood, including the opening of Rosewood London. Most recently, I completed the opening of The Surrey on the Upper East Side. Next, I am embarking on an exciting venture with Aman, one of the world’s top luxury collections, with a focus on the Caribbean—though I will remain a New Yorker, working remotely.
Photography and writing are my creative escapes. I cherish time with my partner Ashley and our dog, Paris. Health and fitness are a priority - I have run three marathons (two in New York)—though I confess, I do enjoy a well-crafted martini (or three).
2. When and how did you first learn about St. George’s Society of New York?
In 2023, I sponsored a table at the British Bash and immediately felt a connection. The Society welcomed me warmly, and I knew I wanted to be part of an organization with such strong and inspiring values.
3. What made you interested in joining the board of directors?
It stems from my admiration for the Society’s mission. I genuinely believe it’s one of the most remarkable non-profits out there. If I can contribute even a modest 5% toward building awareness, raising funds, and fostering community connections, it will be deeply rewarding.
4. What hopes do you have for the Society during your term on the board?
I would love to help grow membership, enhance awareness, and bolster fundraising efforts. I am also keen to contribute to a robust membership activation program, which could, in turn, increase funding and amplify networking opportunities.
5. What was the biggest culture shock about NYC when you first moved here?
New York was everything I had imagined and more, it’s genuinely become my home. I even find charm in the brazen confidence of the occasional rat strutting by with a cane and a swagger.
6. What’s your favourite moment so far, from your involvement at St. George’s?
Undoubtedly, the sense of community. The kindness and generosity I have witnessed are extraordinary and heartwarming.
7. What’s your best NYC memory?
I have two standout moments.
First, my first official date with my partner (I feel a bit too grown-up to use “girlfriend”). It involved martinis, shrimp cocktail, and an immediate sense that she was about to change my world.
Second, my inaugural visit to the Café Carlyle - a true New York institution. It was an evening filled with live cabaret, delicious food, hearty laughter, and mingling with the Upper East Side community. If you haven’t been, it’s a must.
