2018 English Ball Sets Fundraising Record

St. George’s Society hosted our annual gala, The English Ball, on Monday 23rd April at the Mandarin Oriental in New York raising almost $700,000 for the Society’s charitable programs. Over 400 guests gathered on St. George’s Day to celebrate the achievements of our 2018 honorees: Dan Glaser, President and CEO of Marsh & McLennan Companies and Lady Weatherstone of The Weatherstone Family Foundation.

The dinner opened with a spectacular performance of the British and American national anthems by the Senior Boy Choristers of The Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue.

In addition to the award presentations, Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s conducted a “Fund-A-Scholar” auction raising a record-breaking $151,776 for the Society’s Scholarship Program. All the funds raised will be awarded to low-income, final-year students at Lehman and Hunter Colleges later this year, enabling them to complete their education and launch their careers.

Preceding the auction, 2017 Lehman College scholar and aspiring doctor, Natalie Thomas, spoke about the impact of receiving the St. George’s Scholarship:

As many of you might know, the cost of college is more than just tuition, and becoming a St. George’s Society scholar is more than just financial aid. It means that a group of people—people like you—who have never met me, believe in me and believe in my ability to accomplish my goals. That kind of support—that kind of faith—is powerful.

We extend our gratitude to this year’s Presenting Sponsor: Marsh & McLennan Companies; our Gold Sponsors: AIG, Chubb and XL Catlin; our Silver Sponsors: CRC Group, Ironshore, Lady Weatherstone and Zurich Insurance; and our Bronze Sponsors: Deloitte, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue.
