Member Spotlight: Meet Steven Brown
Introducing Steven Brown, our member spotlight! You may have seen Steve at our Summer Cocktails or the September Midweek Mixer. He is also on our Events Committee. Learn more about why Steven just recently joined SGSNY!
How did you come to learn about St. George's Society of NY? When I first arrived in NYC a work colleague introduced me to the quarterly pub quiz that was run by St Georges. We got a group of friends together and attended, loved it and it became a regular meet up every quarter, but it was not until a few years later that I took the plunge to join as a member.
What is your favorite part of being a SGSNY member? It is the people and the networking. I love making new connections and connecting other people to one another. The St George’s membership is so varied and engaged it is easy to do this and since the work they do is so important I feel like I am making a difference while having fun!
How has being a part of SGSNY helped you as a new New Yorker (personally and/or professionally)? I’ve been here over ten years so apparently I count as a New Yorker now! It’s a great platform to meet other Brits in New York. When I worked for a British company, whenever new colleagues arrived from the UK to live in NY, I would mention the quiz/drinks as a way to help them socialize outside of work and for them to meet new people which in turn helped me strengthen work relationships. The SGSNY events (especially the monthly meet ups) still help with this by offering a relaxed, interesting and fun experience I can introduce new people to, a number of whom have become members in their own right!
What is your favorite place in NYC? Favorite food or meal you've had since you've been here? I mean that is a hard one! Front of mind (because it was recent) a friend treated me to a great meal at Manhatta, we had a window seat for the amazing views which added to the whole experience. I love The Marshal (www.the-marshal.com) in Hell’s Kitchen, it does fantastic (and very reasonable) wine pairing evenings. I love a good take-out and my go-to places (now) are close by me on the Upper East - for amazing ramen, Pengs Noodle Folk (www.pengsnoodlefolk.com) is the best and a great Indian I have had (like home) is Dhaba (www.dhabanyc.com)
