Meet Ahmed

Ahmed Siiba.jpg

When Ahmed immigrated from his home country of Ghana to New York, he saw it as an opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.

Growing up I spent time living with my aunt’s family in a small village far from the city. I witnessed so many people suffer and even die from preventable diseases because of a lack of resources and doctors. It was then that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine.

His father had other ideas. Concerned about the cost of education, he urged his son to find a job or join the military. Thankfully, a family friend recognized Ahmed’s potential and encouraged him to apply to college—going so far as to arranging appointments for him with the admissions and financial aid offices to explore his options.

After earning his Associate’s degree in Biology from Bronx Community College, he transferred to Lehman to continue his education. Balancing Biochemistry coursework with two jobs was no easy task, but he managed. His scholarship from St. George’s Society was both a relief and reassurance,

It gave me a sense of confidence—that I’m on the right path and I can achieve my goal.

Following graduation, Ahmed plans to sit for his MCAT before applying to medical schools in the fall. He hopes to become an orthopedic surgeon and return to Ghana to set up a free clinic for people like those in his aunt’s village. As to the challenges ahead, "I have no complaints. I see it as a journey towards a goal I have. I’m just grateful to be on the right track."
